Business Definitions

Actual Cash Value: The Replacement cost of lost or damaged property minus depreciation.

Blanket Insurance: A type of property insurance that covers either multiple properties at one location or one or more types of property at several locations.

Coinsurance Clause: A clause in which the insured agrees to share in the loss to the extent that he/she is underinsured at the time of loss.

Comprehensive Coverage: Also known as “other than collision” coverage. It covers losses by fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, etc.

Declaration (Dec): Part of the contract in which information such as the name and address of the insured, the property to be insured, its location and description, the policy period, the amount of coverage, and the amount of premium are stated.

Deductible: The portion of the loss that is to be paid by the insured before any claim may be paid by the insurer.

Negligence: Failure to use that degree of care which a person of reasonable prudence would use.

Peril: The causes of loss insured against in an insurance policy.

Replacement Cost: The cost of replacing property without a reduction for depreciation.

Underinsured Motorists Coverage: Coverage in an automobile insurance policy under which the insurer will pay costs up to specified limits for bodily injury if the liable driver’s policy limits are exhausted and he cannot pay the full amount for which he is liable.

Uninsured Motorists Coverage: A policy that pays for damages that the insured is entitled to recover from the owner of an uninsured vehicle.
